ULYSSES COSPIN observations of the energy and charge dependence of the propagation of solar energetic particles to the Sun’s south polar regions

چکیده
We present a first report of energetic charged particle observations at latitudes above 70ÆS from the COSPIN instruments on Ulysses during Ulysses’ recently completed pass over the Sun’s south polar regions. Solar energetic particles dominated the particle flux during most of the pass, and for > 30 MeV protons there was a close correspondence between intensity increases at IMP-8 near Earth and at Ulysses. Intensities in the equator and polar regions were often comparable, especially in the late phases of large events, despite the large radial, longitudinal and latitudinal separations of the spacecraft. Enhancements attributable to events originating near the solar equator were observed at Ulysses down to the lowest energies measured ( ̃0.3 MeV). The clear conclusion is that even at solar maximum, latitudinal propagation is far more efficient than had been expected before Ulysses. At high energies (> ̃100 MeV) two Forbush decrease-like events were observed, the highest latitude such events ever seen.

Ulysses COSPIN observations of cosmic rays and solar energetic particles from the South Pole to the North Pole of the Sun during solar maximum
In 2000–2001 Ulysses passed from the south to the north polar regions of the Sun in the inner heliosphere, providing a snapshot of the latitudinal structure of cosmic ray modulation and solar energetic particle populations during a period near solar maximum. Observations from the COSPIN suite of energetic charged particle telescopes show that latitude variations in the cosmic ray intensity in t...
متن کاملThe high latitude pass of ULYSSES: energetic particle observations with EPAC
We report on observations of energetic particles (EP) during the ascent of ULYSSES to the south pole, on the fast pass from south to north and in the first few months after the north polar pass. After it left the ecliptic plane the spacecraft moved periodically into a corotating (26 days period) fast solar wind stream and observed the accelerated EP associated with the forward and reverse shock...

Low energy ion and electron measurements made over the south and north polar regions of the sun by the HISCALE instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft during its solar minimum polar passages are summarized. The polar flux levels were considerably reduced in comparison to fluxes in the vicinity of the heliospheric current sheet. Flux variations with a period of ∼ 26 days were seen to nearly 80◦S bu...

We compare observations of the modulated intensities and spectra of galactic cosmic ray nuclei and anomalous heliumabove 30MeV/nmeasured by theCOsmic andSolar Particle INvestigations (COSPIN) High Energy Telescope (HET) on Ulysses with similar observations from the IMP-8 earthorbiting satellite between September 1994 and August 1995. During this interval Ulysses made a rapid scan of solar latit...
متن کاملThe Effect of Solar Particles in the Choice of Alloy Shielding in a Satellite
The damages and logical failures in dierent parts of a satellite may occur during a solar event, when a bulk of solar energetic particles approaching the Earth. During solar events, these particles may cause extensive damages which are even permanent (hard errors). A way of damage reduction is designing a proper coating as the fuselage. As protons are the major component of solar particles and ...
